This viral melon ice cream is creamy, refreshing, and made with just 2 main ingredients. The frozen melon is scraped directly inside the rind and mixed with cold heavy cream for an easy summer dessert with no blender needed.

I love ice cream, so after seeing this viral melon trend all over social media, I had to test it for myself. I tried it with a ripe melon and cold heavy cream, mixing everything directly inside the frozen shell.

The result is refreshing, creamy, and full of melon flavor, especially if you already enjoy melon-based desserts. After testing it, I found that it tastes even better with a little sweetener, vanilla, and a small pinch of salt. Those simple additions help bring out the natural sweetness of the fruit and give it more of an ice cream flavor.

I also really like that you do not need a blender or ice cream machine, and everything is mixed right inside the melon shell. Just be prepared for a surprisingly good arm workout from all the scraping!

Is Viral Melon Ice Cream Worth Making?

Yes, especially if you love melon and enjoy trying fun food trends. It is refreshing, made with only two main ingredients, and everything is mixed and served right inside the melon shell, which makes it feel a little more special.

That said, scraping the frozen melon takes some effort, and the texture is not quite as smooth as traditional ice cream. For a faster and creamier version, you could simply blend frozen melon cubes with heavy cream, sweetener, and vanilla.

Still, the original method is fun to try at least once, especially on a hot summer day. It is easy, playful, and requires almost no cleanup, apart from the spoon you use for all that scraping.

Prep time 5 minutes
Yields 2 servings

Description

Turn half a ripe melon into a creamy frozen dessert with just a splash of heavy cream. Everything is mixed directly inside the melon, so there is no blender, bowl, or ice cream machine needed.

Ingredients

  • ½ small ripe melon
  • ¼ cup cold heavy cream plus more as needed

Optional Additions

Instructions

  • Slice the melon in half and scoop out all the seeds.
  • Place the melon half cut-side up in a freezer-safe container. Cover well and freeze until the flesh is firm, about 4 hours.
  • Let the frozen melon rest on the counter for a few minutes so it is easier to scrape.
  • Add a small splash of heavy cream to the center.
  • Scrape the melon flesh with a sturdy spoon, working from the edges toward the middle. Stir the frozen melon shavings into the cream as you scrape.
  • Continue adding cream in small amounts until the mixture looks smooth, fluffy, and creamy.
  • Stir in vanilla, sweetener, or a pinch of salt, if desired.
  • Enjoy immediately from the melon shell.

Notes

Choose a fragrant, fully ripe melon since the sweetness of the fruit makes a big difference.
Do not pour in all the cream at once. Adding it gradually helps you control the texture.
For a dairy-free option, replace the heavy cream with chilled coconut cream.
This dessert is best served right after mixing, while it is still thick and frozen.
